PREFACE
This Standard has been developed by the ANSI/ISEA Z358 Committee on Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment. It has been prepared to provide an industry standard for the performance requirements of eyewash and shower equipment.
The Standard has been developed in accordance with the consensus principles of the American National Standards Institute.
This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1. SCOPE
This Standard provides minimum requirements for the performance, use, installation, testing, maintenance, and training for the use of emergency eyewash and shower equipment intended for use in the workplace.
2. APPLICATION
This Standard applies to all types of emergency eyewash and shower equipment, including combination units, portable units, plumbed units, and units with automatic activation.
3. DEFINITIONS
3.1 Acceptable Fluid: A fluid that is safe for the eyes and skin.
3.2 Activation: The act of initiating the functioning of the eyewash or shower equipment.
3.3 Automatic Activation: The act of initiating the functioning of the eyewash or shower equipment by means of an electronic, mechanical, or other device.
3.4 ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 Standard: This Standard.
3.5 Combination Unit: A single unit that combines an eyewash and a shower.
3.6 Emergency Eyewash: Equipment designed for the immediate flushing of the eyes and face with an acceptable fluid to reduce the possibility of permanent injury.
3.7 Emergency Shower: Equipment designed for the immediate drenching or flushing of the entire body with an acceptable fluid to reduce the possibility of permanent injury.
3.8 Flush Time: The period of time required to provide a continuous flow of acceptable fluid.
3.9 Immediate Use Zone: An area surrounding an eyewash or shower unit within which personal protective equipment, tools, and other items needed to respond to an emergency are available.
3.10 Plumbed Unit: An eyewash or shower unit that is connected to a plumbing system.
3.11 Portable Unit: An eyewash or shower unit that is not connected to a plumbing system.
4. REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General Requirements
4.1.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed, constructed, installed, operated, and maintained in accordance with this Standard.
4.1.2 All eyewash and shower units shall be approved by a nationally recognized testing agency and shall be labeled with the approval mark.
4.2 Placement
4.2.1 Eyewash and shower units shall be placed within 10 seconds travel time to any area of the workplace where hazardous materials are handled or where a potential exists for eye or skin contact with hazardous materials.
4.2.2 Eyewash and shower units shall be located in an area that is free from obstruction, dust, dirt, and other contaminants.
4.2.3 Eyewash and shower units shall be located within an immediate use zone and in an area that is clearly visible and accessible at all times.
4.2.4 Eyewash and shower units shall be placed so that there is adequate headroom and clearance for a wheelchair to approach the unit and activate the equipment.
4.3 Activation
4.3.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed so that they can be activated without the use of any special knowledge, effort, or tools.
4.3.2 Eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed with a mechanism to activate the unit without the need for a person to touch any part of the unit or its activation mechanism.
4.3.3 Eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed to activate with one hand.
4.3.4 All plumbed units shall be designed and constructed to activate with a single motion or with a minimal number of motions.
4.3.5 All portable units shall be designed and constructed with an activation mechanism that is easy to use and requires minimal effort to operate.
4.4 Flush Time
4.4.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed to provide a minimum flush time of 15 minutes.
4.4.2 All plumbed units shall be designed and constructed to provide a continuous flow of acceptable fluid for a minimum flush time of 15 minutes.
4.4.3 All portable units shall be designed and constructed to provide a continuous flow of acceptable fluid for a minimum flush time of 15 minutes.
4.5 Acceptable Fluid
4.5.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed to provide an acceptable fluid for use in the eyes and skin.
4.5.2 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed to provide a continuous flow of acceptable fluid for a minimum flush time of 15 minutes.
4.5.3 All eyewash and shower units shall be designed and constructed to provide a minimum flush rate of 0.4 gallons per minute.
4.6 Testing and Maintenance
4.6.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be tested and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
4.6.2 All eyewash and shower units shall be tested and maintained at least weekly to ensure that they are functioning properly and providing an acceptable fluid.
4.6.3 All eyewash and shower units shall be tested and maintained in accordance with the requirements of ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014.
4.7 Training
4.7.1 All persons who may be exposed to hazardous materials shall be trained in the proper use of eyewash and shower equipment.
4.7.2 All persons who may be exposed to hazardous materials shall be trained in the proper use of eyewash and shower equipment in accordance with the requirements of ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014.
5. MARKING
5.1 All eyewash and shower units shall be marked with the following information:
a. Manufacturer’s name and address;
b. Model number;
c. Date of manufacture;
d. Date of last inspection;
e. ANSI/ISEA Z358.1-2014 Standard;
f. Approval mark of a nationally recognized testing agency; and
g. Any additional information required by the manufacturer.
